NEWBERG, Ore. — The George Fox volleyball team edged past NWC rival Pacific in Miller Gymnasium in a match that came down to the wire Wednesday night. The Bruins pulled off a 15-12 tiebreaker set win to claim the victory.
How it Happened
George Fox cruised in the opening set, 25-15. The Bruins scored points in seven of the final nine serves in the set and took advantage of a Pacific error to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Pacific returned the favor in the second set, claiming a 25-16 set to level the match 1-1 as the Bruins hit just .111 as a team with six errors in the second frame.
The Bruins and Boxers traded set wins in sets three and four to force a tiebreaker set. George Fox hit .440 in set three and held the Boxers to a .111 attack percentage in set three, but struggled again in a set four loss, hitting just .121 with another six errors in the frame.
Both squads went point for point all the way to an 11-11 score in the race to 15. George Fox only allowed one more point to the Boxers after the 11-11 tie, and Addison Hawes serves up an ace to finish off the win.
Top Performers
Kassandra Staton had a great night with game-highs of 19 kills and 21 digs to go with an ace as she led the way for the Bruins, notching her 10th double-double of the year in the win. This is the second time that Staton has notched a double-double against Pacific this season - a month ago, Staton tallied 20 kills and 21 digs in their win at the Boxers' gym. Hawes had a career-best 47 assists for the Bruins to direct the offense.
Coach's Thoughts
"Tonight's match was inconsistent, to say the least, but for us to work through it and come out with a win is a huge step for this program and the future," coach Emily Davis said afterwards.
What It Means
The Bruins are now two games over .500 on the year at 10-8 and are one game under .500 in conference at 6-7 with three matches left in the regular season.
