Bruins Avenge Loss With Win Over Willamette In Newberg

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox volleyball team hosted Willamette on Friday night in a Northwest Conference tilt. George Fox was looking to avenge their road loss at the hands of the Bearcats at the beginning of the month and came away with a 3-1 victory.

How it Happened

The Bruins looked settled in early, taking the first set 25-17. George Fox had five blocks in the opening frame alone and did well to repel the Willamette attack. The Bruins and Bearcats exchanged points in the early going, running up to an even 11-11 score before the Bruins powered ahead to win 14 of the next 20 serves to earn a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins repeated the performance in the second set with another 25-17 win to take a 2-0 lead. Addison Robertson threw in five kills for the Bruins in the second set as they looked primed for a sweep.

Willamette wouldn't let the Bruins get off too easy. The Bearcats edged out the third set 25-23 to make it 2-1 George Fox and force a fourth set.

George Fox put the Bearcats away in the fourth set 25-18. The Bruins rushed out to an 18-11 lead and never let up. A Willamette error gave the Bruins their final point to make a 3-1 George Fox victory.

Top Performers

Bailey LeBreton led the way for the Bruins with 14 kills to go along with a .290 hitting percentage and two blocks. Kassandra Staton turned in a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Coach's Thoughts

"Willamette is such a hard working team," coach Emily Davis said of the match. "We need to work on our consistency, but to come out with a conference win tonight is a whole team effort!"

What It Means

The Bruins improve to 11-8 overall and an even .500 in NWC play at 7-7.
