ABILENE, Texas --- The George Fox men's basketball team traveled to face McMurry and fought hard in a heartbreaking loss, 84-83, that came down to the final possession of the game.
How It Happened
George Fox and McMurray traded shots all afternoon in a tight matchup that came down to foul shots in the second half.
The Warhawks grabbed the lead with a quick 6-2 run to start the game, but Fox fought back to tie it up at 8-8 after a Zac Schmerber trey and a pair of foul shots. Donovan Cox and James Moore helped keep the Bruins in lockstep with strong shooting performances from outside and at the half Fox trailed by one, 45-44.
The second half ended as a 39-39 draw, giving the Warhawks the win in the last five seconds. The Bruins were able to build a seven-point lead and held on to their advantage for most of the second half, but a critical defensive stand and key free throws favored McMurry in the closing moments. Fox held on to a six-point lead with under five minutes left, but the Warhawks outscored the Bruins 10-2 in the last moments of regulation to steal a one-point win on their home court. Kalu Stricklin grabbed a last-second rebound and created a good look at a last shot, but his three-point try rimmed out at the buzzer.
