Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. --- The Bruins' softball program battled their way to a doubleheader split against the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on the road on Sunday, Feb. 28.
How It Happened
The Bruins claimed game one with a 4-0 shutout behind a solid start from Ashley Davis in the circle and productive hitting from their position players. Davis notched three strikeouts and only allowed two baserunners - both on Lutes hits - in a five-inning effort and did not surrender a walk in her winning effort. At the plate, the Bruins scratched two runs across in the second inning and plated single insurance tallies in the fourth and fifth frames for the 4-0 lead.
The Bruins were able to take an early 2-0 lead in game two with single runs in the first and second frames, but the Lutes were able to tie the game in the second and took the lead for good in the fourth. George Fox scratched one run across in the top of the seventh and was in position to tie the game, but the Lutes were able to wiggle off the hook in the seventh and took a 5-3 win to split the day.
Top Performers
Davis was effective in the win as a pitcher and Caitlyn Rhoades was equally solid in relief for two frames in game one. At the plate, Potter was an impressive five for seven as the Bruins' leadoff and finished the afternoon with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
What It Means
The Bruins are 4-4 after the split while the Lutes move to 2-2. The win also puts head coach Jessica Hollen one win away from her 250th as the Bruins' skipper.
What Happens Next
The Bruins have a long layoff until their conference opener on Mar. 20 in Portland against Lewis & Clark, barring any COVID protocol chances or late additions to the preseason schedule.
