Newberg, Ore. --- The George Fox Bruins finished their weekend winning three of four against the Puget Sound Loggers. Sunday's game one went to UPS by a final of 5-1. GFU bounced back in game two, winning 8-0 in five innings.
How it Happened
The Loggers were on the board first with a run in the top of the third, but the Bruins tied it up with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Olivia Nelson scored on a throwing error by the catcher while stealing third. Though George Fox attempted to build some momentum off the run, their bats fell silent. Logger's pitcher Kelsie Sullivan struck out 13 Bruins, allowing only two hits in her complete game. With the Bruin offense under wraps, Puget Sound reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth and padded on some insurance runs in the seventh to seal the deal 5-1.
George Fox recuperated and returned to normal form in game two, wreaking havoc in the box. In the bottom of the first, the Bruins started cooking with a Savannah Vargas double, advancing Kamryn Potter to third. Claire Fountain brought home Potter with a sacrifice fly and Katie Ladd scored Vargas with a two-out RBI single. To top it off, Jennifer McCue laced a two-run homer over the left field fence to make the score 4-0. In the bottom of the second, the long ball struck again, this time off the bat of Vargas. Her two-out, two-run shot over the scoreboard in left increased the lead six. More clutch hitting in the top of the fourth gave the Bruins their last two runs. Potter stroked an RBI double to the right center gap and later scored on an RBI single from Fountain. Sarah Storton completed the top half of the fifth, finalizing the mercy rule win 8-0.
