FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Two points from defeat in the final set, the George Fox volleyball team ran off four consecutive points to earn a hard-fought, come-from-behind 3-2 victory at Pacific University Wednesday night to get back on the winning track in the Northwest Conference.
How it HappenedÂ
Both teams entered the match pining for a conference win. As such, the opening set was a battle. Both sides put together several scoring runs, exchanging leads back and forth through the first 30 serves and coming into a 15-15 tie going down the stretch. After the 15-15 mark, the three-point to five-point runs from both sides were no more and the game took a nickel and dime approach as the serving side could rarely keep control of the serve. Both teams were level at 24-24 and got all the way to 26-26 before a
Kassandra Staton kill, followed by a Pacific error gave George Fox a 28-26 set win and a 1-0 lead.Â
Pacific used a 5-0 run to start the second set to claim an early lead which they never ceded and evened the match up 1-1. The Bruins responded with a fervor. The Bruins trailed 15-14 at the midpoint of the third and turned the set around rapidly, taking a 7-0 run to make it 21-15 and put the Boxers away to make it 2-1.Â
George Fox came out strong in the fourth set, taking a commanding 13-4 lead, but the Boxers weren't about to go away so easily, and came all the way back with a 25-18 turnaround to force a deciding fifth set.Â
In the final set the Bruins weren't going to let a road victory slip away from them, earning a 15-13 win. The Boxers came within two points of victory before George Fox came back from down 13-11 to earn the W.
