PORTLAND, Ore. -- Four days after picking up their first sweep of the year, the George Fox volleyball team swept a team for the second consecutive game, taking down Lewis & Clark, 3-0.
How It Happened
The Bruins recovered quickly from an initial 3-1 deficit, rattling off three straight kills to take a 4-3 lead and never look back. 14 kills by the Bruins, including the exclamation point from
Kassandra Staton to win the set, led the Bruins to a dominant 25-20 set win. The Bruins maintained a four point advantage for the entire second half of the set, and transferred that momentum to the next set.
Fox shot out to an 8-3 lead in the second set, hitting well as a team and adding back-to-back blocks to the mix. Staton and
Piper Harrop commanded the Bruins with their serves — both recorded an ace in the set. With Staton serving, the Bruins scored seven consecutive points en route to a 20-9 lead and 25-13 win.
The third and final set was the most competitive of the day between the two teams. The Pioneers stormed back from an early deficit to take a 15-13 lead; it was the first time all day the Pios had led with more than six points scored all day. The Bruins quickly regrouped and recovered from the Lewis & Clark rally with a counter of their own: Harrop notched two more aces as Fox went on a 9-1 run. The Bruins went on to win the set, 25-20, to earn their second consecutive sweep.
Top Performances
Harrop totaled a career-high five aces on the day, with at least one in each set. Staton and
Addison Robertson led the team with nine kills on the day, while
Kennedy Kibby and
Addison Hawes totaled 18 assists and 14 assists, respectively. Kibby also led the team with four blocks.
Coach's Thoughts
"Midweek games are always tough, so to walk away with one win is a good start to the week," Bruin head coach
Emily Davis said, "I hope we can continue to stay healthy, and play well in the second half of conference. It was a great team effort tonight."
What It Means
The Bruins improve to a 9-7 record, with a 6-3 conference mark. Their NWC record is good for third in conference play, just a half a game behind Puget Sound and Whitworth.
What Happens Next
The Bruins will return home to take on the Pacific Boxers on Friday, October 14. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
