SPOKANE, Wash. — Hoping to bounce back from a loss to Whitman the day before, the Bruins fell in three sets to the Whitworth Pirates.
How It Happened
After scoring the first point of the game, the Bruins were unable to hold off the charging Pirates. Whitworth took a 6-1 lead and refused to give it up for the remainder of the set, putting the Bruins in a 0-1 hole with a 25-15 win.
In the second set, the Bruins were able to remain neck-and-neck with the Pirates, as both offenses answered the other's scores consistently and rapidly. This continued throughout the set, as neither team gained a lead larger than 4 points. The Bruins were able to take a 25-24 lead in the set after a kill from
Addison Robertson, but the Pirates rattled off three in a row to claim set two, 27-25, and put the Bruins in a must-win situation.
The Bruins came out with a vengeance in the third set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead early. The Pirates countered to bring the game to 7-8 before nine straight points from Whitworth put the game away. Fox was unable to respond, resulting in a 25-16 third-set loss for the Bruins in a sweep.
