Whitworth Pulls Away in Sweep Over Bruins

SPOKANE, Wash. — Hoping to bounce back from a loss to Whitman the day before, the Bruins fell in three sets to the Whitworth Pirates.

How It Happened
After scoring the first point of the game, the Bruins were unable to hold off the charging Pirates. Whitworth took a 6-1 lead and refused to give it up for the remainder of the set, putting the Bruins in a 0-1 hole with a 25-15 win.

In the second set, the Bruins were able to remain neck-and-neck with the Pirates, as both offenses answered the other's scores consistently and rapidly. This continued throughout the set, as neither team gained a lead larger than 4 points. The Bruins were able to take a 25-24 lead in the set after a kill from Addison Robertson, but the Pirates rattled off three in a row to claim set two, 27-25, and put the Bruins in a must-win situation.

The Bruins came out with a vengeance in the third set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead early. The Pirates countered to bring the game to 7-8 before nine straight points from Whitworth put the game away. Fox was unable to respond, resulting in a 25-16 third-set loss for the Bruins in a sweep.

Top Performers
Addison Robertson led the Bruin offense with seven kills, while Kennedy Kibby helped as well with 12 assists. On the defensive side, Piper Harris led the Bruins with 19 digs, with Kassandra Staton close behind at 16. The Bruins totaled 10 blocks in the game, with Robertson, Caitlin Nemececk, and Bailey LeBreton leading the way with two assisted blocks.

Coach's Thoughts
"We had a fantastic serve-receive match tonight and I'm proud of our blockers for adjusting and improving from last night's match," Bruin head coach Emily Davis said, "We didn't come to play offensively, and didn't perform the way that we wanted to overall. I hope we can turn around from the tough weekend and pull it together for our last weekend"

What It Means
The Bruins fall to 11-10 overall, 8-6 in Northwest Conference play, and hope to finish their last two games in style.

What Happens Next
The Bruins return to Newberg on November 4th to face Pacific Lutheran at 7:00 p.m. for senior night.
