THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The George Fox women's basketball team's two-game winning streak came to a halt on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Cal Lutheran Regents, 42-75.
How It Happened
The Bruins began the game with a three-pointer from
Emma Reed to take a 3-2 lead. That would be the only lead Fox held all game. Starting point guard
Erin Yoshitake, who had scored 33 points in the Bruins' last two games, left the game after just two minutes of play and was unable to return. Fox was unable to fire up the offense to keep pace, as the Regals marched out to a 20-3 lead before taking a 23-6 advantage into the second.
In the second quarter, the Bruins went on a five-point unanswered streak to cut into the deficit, getting four points back on the Regals with the help of
Ella Roberts, who contributed 10 points on 3-3 from the field and 4-4 on free throws. Roberts' play put the Bruins behind, 34-20, going into the half.
Unfortunately for Fox, the third quarter was shades of the first, as the Bruins were outscored 22-6 in the period. Down 56-26 heading into the fourth, many reserves saw their extended minutes. Freshman
Katie Brown and
Madeline Schumacher scored their first collegiate points in the waning minutes as the Regals pulled away to a 42-75 victory.
Top Performances
Ella Roberts was the leader for the Bruins, both offensively and defensively. Roberts scored 15 points on 5-7 from the field and hit on all five of her free throw attempts. Defensively, Roberts contributed four steals and one defensive rebound.
Jenna Lacey also contributed defensively, grabbing four defensive rebounds and six offensive rebounds to boost the Bruins' effort.
What It Means
The Bruins move to 4-5 overall (1-1 NWC), while Cal Lutheran improves to 5-2.
