SPOKANE, Wash. --- The George Fox baseball team split a doubleheader with Whitworth on Saturday, Mar. 26, with a tough 9-7 loss in game one and a come-from-behind extra-inning win in game two.
Game One
Sean Wiese went six innings in his no-decision start and struck out six while allowing four runs - three earned - before the Pirates were able to get into the Bruins' bullpen and pull out a late victory. Andrew Sutherland was tagged with his first loss of the season after a third of an inning in the seventh.
Fox got on the board first in the third after back to back homers from Spencer Roos and Jonathan Stone, followed by a double steal that got Jared Gee across home plate for a 3-0 lead.
A solo shot from the Pirates in the third put them on the board, and after Gee scored again in the fifth to make it 4-1, the Pirates plated three to tie it at 4-4.
Roos homered again in the sixth, driving in Matthew Sebolsky for two runs, and Noah Meffert drove in a run in the seventh with an RBI single, but the Pirates plated five unanswered runs to take the game, 9-7.
Game Two
Travis Miller pitched six innings in a no-decision outing with two earned runs and five hits sprinkled throughout. Gordon Wend worked two bridge innings with three runs allowed and Noah Meffert earned his fourth win after two innings as the Bruins' closing arm.
The Pirates broke up a pitcher's duel with a solo home run in the fourth and Fox pulled back in front with two runs in the sixth. Meffert doubled in Jeremy Sangalang before scoring on a throwing error from the Pirates' third baseman in the sixth.
The Pirates jumped in front again, 5-2, with runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, before the Bruins were able to even it up at 5-5 in the ninth. Shane White singled and advanced on an error to plate Meffert, and Derek Williams doubled to left field to plate a pair for the tie.
After Sangalang reached via an error in the 10th, Meffert lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field for the winning run. Meffert then proceeded to retire the side via strikeout and a double-play ball.
Top Performances
Meffert made his presence felt in the field, at the plate, and on the mound, Roos homered twice and stole a base, and Jared Miller and Sangalang stole two bags each on the day.
What It Means
Fox moves to 14-13 on the year and is now 4-10 against Northwest Conference opponents in 2022.
