NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox baseball earned another series win on Sunday after breaking out the big bats against Whitman in a 12-5 win.
How It Happened
Ben Wills got the start for Fox and after struggling in the first inning, he settled in to win his fourth game of the year after working five frames against the Blues. Andrew Sutherland bridged the next three frames before Noah Meffert closed the game in the ninth.
The first inning took an hour and five minutes to complete after the Blues scored four and Fox answered with two in the bottom half of the frame. Jared Miller and Noah Meffert both got aboard with walks and would come around to score via a dribbling RBI single from Brandon King and a botched throw from first in an attempt to catch Meffert and stop a second run. An injury and a rule book discussion added a 25-minute delay, but after that, it was all Bruins.
After scoreless innings for both sides in the second and third, the Blues moved their starting right fielder to the mound in the fourth and Fox plated seven runs in the inning to take the lead for good. The P/OH for Whitman faced seven batters and did not record an out before returning to right field and Fox never looked back from there. Two more runs in the fifth made it an 11-4 ball game, and a single run in the sixth ultimately gave the Bruins a 12-5 win in just under four hours on the field.
Top Performances
Spencer Roos threw out a runner attempting to steal and raised his average by nearly 60 points with an impressive weekend, capping it by going 2-4 with two RBI, a double, and a run scored. Meffert and Miller stole two bags apiece to help the Bruins inch closer to the single-season school record of 89 set in 2005.
After his initial stumble in the first, Wills finished the game with four scoreless innings and two strikeouts, and Meffert pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.
Coach's Thoughts
"This is a great series win -we got down early but Ben was able to throw up a couple of zeros which gave us a chance to get back into the game," coach Kevin Kopple said. "Offensively we had some really good ABs and were able to be aggressive on the bases."
What It Means
Fox improves to 17-15 overall and is now 10-8 against conference opponents this season, keeping the Bruins firmly in the hunt for a conference tournament berth.
