Wheels Up! Lacrosse Ready For NCAA Postseason Opener

5/11/2022 1:00:00 PM

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The 2022 NCAA DIII women's lacrosse tournament field is set and the Bruins are heading to Southern California for a matchup against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Pomona-Pitzer's venue on May 14.

The Bruins are in the NCAA postseason for the third straight time a postseason has been avaliable – no tournament was offered in 2020 – ever since the Northwest Conference secured an automatic qualifier bid beginning in 2019. The Bruins earned the AQ slot after capturing their fifth consecutive undefeated conference championship.

CMS is in the field after getting a Pool C bid with a runners-up finish in the SCIAC tournament. The Athenas fell, 15-11, to the No. 24 Sagehens in the tournament championship game but still made the postseason by virtue of a 13-5 season performance. The hosting Sagehens are in via their SCIAC tournament championship victory and an 18-0 record to date, giving them a bye in the first matchup as they await the winner of Fox-CMS.

The Bruins have a balanced offense powered by all-time assists leader & Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Andrea Garcia-Milla, and have multiple possession-finishing players like Carleigh DeLapp, Marena Tharpe, and Kyra Barnes for Garcia-Milla to feed all day for scores.

Fox also has put together the nation's stingiest defensive unit this season, giving them a +13 scoring margin that is second only to Pomona-Pitzer (+13.7) this year. As a team, Fox is no. 2 nationally in shot percentage and first in save percentage and in free position percentage.

All of that will be put to the test against the Athenas this Saturday, as CMS is no slouch itself. The Athenas have five losses on the year, but all are to ranked opponents - three to Pomona-Pitzer, and two to NCAA Top 15 opponents TCNJ and Wesleyan. This is the Athenas' fourth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance and they are averaging 17.4 goals per game while allowing 10.4 per game for a +7.0 scoring margin. CMS has the third-best marks in shot percentage and free positions nationally this year, and they also boast top-20 rankings for points, assists, and scoring offense.

If the Bruins are able to advance past the Athenas - CMS has not won an NCAA postseason game since 2011 - they will face undefeated Pomona-Pitzer at 2:00 pm on May 15. The Sagehens are top five in 10 statistical categories this season, including four no. 1 rankings for scoring margin, assists per game, points per game, and win percentage, and have an active 24-0 winning streak by virtue of the pandemic that dates to the 2020 season.

Live coverage - stats and video - will be linked on the Bruins' website. For those that plan to attend in-person, tickets for each game will be $6 for adults, $3 for seniors and visiting students with school ID, and $2 for children.

Per Pomona-Pitzer's attendance policies, all spectators ages five and up will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test (within 48 hours of the event). Spectators under the age of five will be allowed access without proof of testing or vaccination. For more detailed information on their policy, click here.
