WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- George Fox women's tennis wrapped up its fall slate with a trip to Whitman College for the 2022 ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Six of the Bruins' singles entrants or doubles pairings were able to advance into the quarterfinals of their brackets during the weekend.
How It Happened - Friday
Qualifying play for singles and doubles featured multiple Bruins that were able to play their way into the tournament bracket for singles and doubles. Ari Rader and Neku Onoja played their way into the doubles bracket with an 8-5 win over a duo from Lewis & Clark, and Brenna VanderYacht played her way into the 'A' singles bracket.
How It Happened - Saturday
Four Bruins started the day in the 'A' singles bracket, including Kalli Wiker, Olivia Morris, Ellie Mangan, and VanderYacht. Mangan was able to advance into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 before dropping into the A consolation bracket with her teammates. Morris and Wiker won their way into a semifinals matchup in the consolation bracket that Wiker won, 8-2, and VanderYacht was able to make her way into the A consolation quarterfinals.
In the 'B' singles bracket, Stephanie Ramirez Barreto, Elizabeth Cook, Rader, and Abigail Bond were each able to make it at least as far as the quarterfinal round of B singles. Rader and Cook played each other in the quarterfinal and Rader was able to advance to the semifinals with a 4-6, 7-6, 3-1 (F) win before a Whitman player ended her run on Sunday.
Sophia Denham was able to make the final round of the B consolation bracket with four wins, including an 8-3 victory in the semifinal, before a Lewis & Clark player ultimately won the consolation bracket on Sunday with an 8-3 final match.
In doubles play, two Bruin tandems made their way to the quarterfinal round. Mangan and Morris picked up wins of 8-1 and 8-2 to earn the right to play on Sunday in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the bracket, Cassey Hitch and Wiker won their way to the quarterfinals with an 8-0 sweep and an 8-3 win in the round of 16.
How It Happened - Sunday
Mangan and Morris faced the Pacific Boxers' top tandem in the quarterfinals and fell, 8-1, to a tandem that would make the championship matchup on Monday. In their bout with a duo from Whitman, Hitch and Wiker lost 8-1 to the eventual Regional champion tandem from the hosting Blues' program.
What It Means
The program as a whole was consistently able to advance to at least the quarterfinal round of their brackets during the weekend. The Bruins' coaching staff had ample time to evaluate its deep roster with those wins, and they now turn their attention to preparations for the spring season.
