NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox women's tennis team had three individuals participating on Sunday's final day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. The Bruins could only secure one win on the day but saw many successes throughout the three days of competition.
Weekend Recap
Throughout the weekend, the Bruins witnessed freshman
Riley Bobkiewicz and
Shanah Denham gaining their first taste of the competition they will face in the upcoming spring season. "Both showed they will be tough in the spring," said Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz.
Abigail Bond suffered an earlier defeat to the eventual singles B draw champion. Bond was the sole player to secure a set against Pacific's Mia Yamaguchi. "She definitely showed that she can be a force when she is focused," Cruz commented on Bond.
Elizabeth Cook won against Linfield's number-one player and faced a challenging second-round loss against top-ranked Erica Mock from Whitman.
How It Happened
On Sunday,
Kalli Wiker continued her impressive singles A bracket run but was halted by Pacific's Sydnie Binder in the semifinals.
Cassey Hitch experienced a similar fate, ending her run in her brackets semifinal match.
After two initial wins,
Sophie Denham lost in the third round but bounced back to secure victory in the 3rd round consolation draw.
Coach's Thoughts
"I thought the entire team played well," said Bruin head coach
Rick Cruz, "As a group, we learned what we will need to work on in the off-season to compete and beat the best. I'm excited to see what this group can accomplish in the spring!"
