SALEM, Ore. -- One day after their four-game winning streak was snapped, the George Fox volleyball team dominated the Willamette Bearcats from the get-go as they cruised to a three-set victory on the road.
How It Happened
After a back-and-forth stretch in the first set, the Bruins found themselves up, 11-8 — they would then go on an absolute tear, scoring five straight points to establish a 17-9 lead. The Bruins would only give up three more points in the set, as a trio of
Kassandra Staton kills helped Fox end the frame with a 25-12 win.
The next set would be much closer than the first, as the Bearcats seemed determined not to let the Bruins run away with the second set. The Bruins had a five-point lead, 15-10, but the Bearcats responded with four straight points before Staton came up clutch again, picking up a kill in the next play, ending the run and halting the Bearcat's momentum. The Bruins kept the Bearcats at arm's length until they eventually found themselves tied, at 21 each. Fox took service back on a service error by Willamette and then scored three straight points to take them to, 24-21. Willamette managed to score on the next play, but Fox closed it out in the next point to send them into the third set with the chance to earn a sweep and go home early.
Fox played some of their best volleyball of the season for much of the third set — they found themselves up by a whopping 12 points,17-3. GFU had five kills during the run and paired with the so-so play of their competition, it looked like the third set would be smooth sailing. Willamette would not let it go that easy, however, as they went on a run of their own, they brought the score within four points at one point. However, it was too little too late and Fox finished the game up with an
Olivia Jacobsen kill followed by a Jacobsen and Staton tandem block for the final point.
