NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox swim program competed in their first competition at home on Saturday morning, taking on the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in a tight dual meet.
The Bruins competed in 22 events across both the men's and women's programs. Both teams ultimately came up short, with the women falling 96-108, and the men losing, 93-110.
Top Performances
The Bruins opened the meet with solid performances in both the men's and women's 200 medley. The men's team of
Owen Tonseth,
Jared Gray,
Cody Moreland and
Wyatt Greene finished in 1:49.12 to secure second, while
Ellie Opdahl,
Riley Parker,
Britney Muralt and
Mia Smith clinched first place with their mark of 1:55.66.
In the men's 1650 freestyle,
Austin Rohrbach had a strong swim to place second, finishing with a time of 18:42.07.
Jesse Urback dominated in the women's division of the 1650 freestyle, winning by 30 seconds with her time of 19:08.50.
Abby Roche also had a solid performance, taking third place in 21:23.51.
Wyatt Greene and
Kaden Oprea continued their strong starts to the season in the men's 200 freestyle, taking second and third respectively with their times of 1:54.18 ad 1:56.85.
In the women's 200 freestyle,
Laurel Knox was the best finisher for Fox, securing second in 2:02.49.
Britney Muralt was right behind her, taking third in 2:04.21.
Riley Parker topped the leaderboard in the women's 50 freestyle, clocking in at 25.48.
Aries Valenzuela finished in 22.62 to secure second in the men's 50 freestyle, while
August Maberry took third with a time of 23.15.
Greene was the best finisher for Fox in the men's 400 IM, placing second with his time of 4:37.03.
Owen Tonseth also secured a podium finish, his time of 5:01.44 good enough for third place.Â
The women's 400 IM saw the Bruins collect another two podiums, with
Kaylee Dicey and
Ellie Hoover clinching second and third with times of 5:10.17 and 5:12.87.
Senior
Levi Gibson had a strong swim in the men's 100 butterfly, finishing second in 56.73. Opera also raced well, taking third with a time of 57.15.Â
In the men's 100 freestyle,
Cameron Alexander was the best finisher, placing second with his time of 51.63.
In the women's 100 freestyle event
Mia Smith and
Ellie Opdahl impressed, racing neck-and-neck to secure second and third for the Bruins. Smith finished with a time of 58.23, while Opdahl was right on her heels with a mark of 58.53.
Owen Tonseth took second place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.65, while
August Maberry clinched third place in 1:00.07.
Laurel Knox dominated the field in the women's 500 freestyle, winning with a time of 5:32.95 – six seconds ahead of the rest of the field.Â
Levi Gibson was the next Bruin to pick up a win in the men's 100 breaststroke, topping the leaderboard with a mark of 1:01.07.
Strom Nordeng also had a solid race, finishing third in 1:05.99.
In the women's 100 breastroke
Riley Parker was the best finisher, taking second in 1:09.22 ahead of teammate
Britney Muralt, who claimed third with her time of 1:10.95.
The Bruins ended the meet with the 200 yard freestyle relay events. In the men's division,
Kaden Oprea, Alexander Cameron,
Aries Valenzuela and
Levi Gibson won with a time of 1:32.34. In the women's event
Laurel Knox,
Ellie Hoover, Claire Benevides and Jessie Urback finished the race in 1:47.10, finishing second place to wrap up the meet.
