AUSTIN, Texas -- The George Fox Bruins' baseball team put up four runs in the first three innings, while their pitching shut down the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys as Fox picked up their second win of the season on Friday at Concordia Texas.
How It Happened
Noah Meffert got the bats going for GFU in the bottom of the first, picking up an infield single in the first at-bat for the Bruins. He would advance to third on an errant throw a few pitches later, before
Jeremy Sangalang hit an opposite-field double to score Meffert and put Fox up 1-0.
The Bruins would pounce again in the third — following a double by Meffert,
Jared Gee picked up an RBI single to center. Sangalang hit another extra-base RBI with a triple that scored Gee, and then scored not long after to put GFU up four on the Cowboys.
Travis Miller got the start on the bump, throwing 110 pitches over six full innings with four strikeouts and just two runs given up. Miller held the Cowboys to six hits, keeping them off the basepaths and limiting their opportunities to score. The senior left the game with a 4-2 lead and handed the ball to
Alex Abbott, who went two innings, giving up one run while keeping the Cowboys at bay. Abbott's pitching provided an excellent setup for Meffert to pick up his second save of the young season — the sophomore shut down HSU, picking up two K's during the 1-2-3 inning. Fox won 4-3, starting their Texas weekend off strong.
