AUSTIN, Texas -- George Fox baseball won their first of two games against a Texas Lutheran team that's receiving votes in the D3baseball top 25 poll, winning 7-3, but lost the second game of the day to Concordia Texas, 3-6.
Game One
The Bruins put up plenty of offense against the TLU Bulldogs — Fox started out the first inning shutting down the Bulldog bats, then scoring two runs in the first. Those two runs came because of clever base running by Fox:
Noah Meffert got on base to lead off the game, then stole second base.
Jeremy Sangalang singled to move Meffert to third, then Sangalang stole second, and Mefffert scored on an errored throw to kick off the scoring.
Spencer Roos singled, bringing Sangalang in from scoring position and giving Fox a 2-0 lead.
GFU picked up an unearned run in the second, then loaded the bases after a single and back-to-back walks in the bottom half of the third.
Carson Coulter singled to bring in two more runs, increasing the Bruin lead to 5-0.Â
Meffert picked up an RBI single in the sixth, ballooning the Bruin lead to 7-0 going into the seventh inning. TLU put three runs across in the seventh and eighth, but the Fox lead was too large, with Fox winning, 7-3.
Ethan Whitney got the win for the Bruins, going six full innings, striking out four, and allowing no runs.
Game Two
Fox had five runs scored against them in the first two innings by the Concordia Tornados, and the Bruins looked to rally. Despite a Sangalang RBI in the third and a
Brandon King RBI triple in the sixth, the Bruins couldn't find enough to overcome the early deficit, losing 6-3.
It was a group effort on the mound
Ben Wills started the game, going 5.0 while giving up five runs (three earned). He struck out two and walked one.
Caleb Debban pitched 2.1 relief innings, striking out four and giving up one run, while
Spencer Johnson closed out the game, picking up the final two outs for the Bruins.
