Fox Falls in Two High-Scoring Games, Stags Sweep Series

La MIRADA, Calif. -- The Bruins baseball team put up a combined 19 runs over the two games Saturday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, but couldn't pull out a win.

Game One
The Bruins jumped out to an early lead after a monster first inning saw four runs cross the plate. In the third, a Spencer Roos solo shot followed by a sac fly gave Fox a six-run lead just three innings in. The Roos homerun was the Bruins' first of the year and was followed by a Noah Meffert two-run blast in the fourth to put the Bruins up 8-3.

The Stags didn't stay behind for long, mounting a massive comeback and scoring ten runs in three innings to take a 10-8 lead in the sixth inning. They added another run in the seventh to push their lead to 11-8.

Fox managed to load the bases in the eighth, giving them a chance to start a rally to take the lead, but they left two runners stranded after scoring one. They lost the high-scoring affair 10-11, hitting .278 in the game, but leaving 10 runners on base on the day.

Game Two
GFU pounced on the Stags pitching early once again, taking advantage of a CMS error in the third — a Jeremy Sangalang sac fly scored Meffert, and the Bruins found themselves up 2-0. The Stags responded in the bottom of the same inning, however, scoring five runs on three hits. The Stags went up 8-3 in the bottom of the fourth after tacking on three more runs, leaving Fox with plenty of work to do.

In the top half of the fifth, the Bruins not only tied, but took the lead, scoring six runs on six hits, including RBIs for Brandon King, Shane White, and Jarred Miller. Though they left the bases loaded, the Bruins took a 9-8 lead. The lead would be short-lived as CMS immediately responded in their half of the inning with five runs to go up 13-9.

Caleb Debban came into the game to pitch for the Bruins during the tough fifth inning, and went the rest of the way for Fox, allowing no runs for the rest of the game while striking out three Stags hitters. Unfortunately for GFU, they were only able to get two base runners the rest of the game after a hot start, losing the game, 13-9.

Top Performances
Ethan Whitney started on the mound in the first game and struck out eight batters while allowing four runs (three earned) over five innings. Noah Meffert went 3-5 in the first game with a home run, and 2-3 in the second, he added a stolen base in both games. Spencer Roos went 2-3 in the first game with two RBIs, while Brandon King had one RBI in both games, going 4-9 total from the plate for the day.

What It Means
The Bruins drop the first series of the season and fall to 0-3. CMS improves to 3-0.

What Comes Next
The Bruins play the No. 7 team in the nation Sunday, squaring off against the Chapman Panthers in Orange County, Calif. First-pitch is scheduled for noon.
