ORANGE, Calif. -- The George Fox baseball team was playing their fourth game in three days on Sunday, after dropping three to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to start a California swing. No. 7-ranked Chapman was playing their first game of the season.
The Bruins responded from their losses the day prior, taking down the Panthers, 4-1, to pick up their first win of the season.
How It Happened
After a 1-2-3 inning from both the Bruins and the Panthers, Fox locked in, running out to a 3-0 lead over three innings.
Spencer Roos was the first player on base at the top of the second with a single, and quickly advanced to second base thanks to a single from
Brandon King.
Jared Miller drove Roos home to put the Bruins up one, and
Evan Balingit sent King home on a sac fly to put the Bruins up 1-0.
SCIAC Pitcher of the Year Wyatt Thompson made it only three innings against the Bruin bats, as Fox extended their lead to 3-0 on a Thompson balk.
Jeremy Sangalang, who was on third thanks to a double and a Roos grounder, scored to push the Bruin lead.
Ben Wills pitched excellently for the Bruins in his first start of the year, only allowing a single base runner in the first four innings. Chapman scored one run in the fifth off of Wills to inch closer, but Fox locked down with a quick putout.
After a scoreless sixth inning,
Bleu Ellis delivered the knockout punch, slamming a ball deep for the Bruins' first home run of the day to give Fox a three-run lead.
Alex Abbott and
Noah Meffert finished out the day, with Meffert picking up the save in the Bruins' 4-1 upset win over the No. 7 Panthers.
Top Performers
Fox recorded seven hits on the day, with Ellis the lone Bruin to total two hits. Balingit, playing in his first collegiate game, picked up his first career RBI, while Miller picked up his second RBI of the season. Wills, Abbott, and Meffert allowed just four hits, with each pitcher delivering two strikeouts. Meffert didn't allow a baserunner in his two innings to close the game.
Coach's Thoughts
"We got a great start from Ben, and Alex and Noah were great out of the pen," Bruin head coach
Kevin Kopple said, "Offensively, we competed and found a way against a really good baseball team."
What It Means
The Bruins pick up their first win of the season in a big way, improving to 1-3. The Panthers drop their first game of the year and sit at 0-1.
