NEWBERG, Ore. -- After their games were rescheduled for the weather, the George Fox baseball team played a rare NWC Sunday doubleheader, losing both to Willamette, 3-4 and 5-9.
Game One
The first game was a pitcher's duel compared to other high-scoring games around the conference, with Fox's pitchers (starter
Ethan Whitney and reliever
Caleb Debban) allowing just three earned runs. However, it was a lone unearned run that proved to be the back-breaker in the loss.
At the end of the second, Willamette led 2-1 — Willamette scoring off of a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, Fox off a
Jared Miller sacrifice fly.
Jeremy Sangalang tied the game with an RBI triple in the fifth, but Willamette grabbed another run in the sixth with an RBI double. In the seventh, GFU walked a runner. who moved to third throughout the inning before a throwing error allowed him to score and give Willamette a 4-2 lead.Â
The Bruins scored on another sacrifice fly in the eighth to get them a run closer, but they couldn't score again in the ninth, losing the game 4-3.
Game Two
The second game featured a long rain delay in the bottom half of the fourth, with the sun peaking out towards the end of the game.
Willamette scored five runs in the first two innings in poor weather — scoring off a George Fox error in the first, and a double, wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. Fox added two in the second on an RBI single, then scored on a dropped third strike that got past the Willamette catcher.Â
Another George Fox run in the fourth off an Evan Banglit single brought the game to 5-3 before the rains came in. After a 35-minute delay, Fox gave up four runs in the top half of the fifth to make the game 9-3. The Bruins would add runs in the sixth and the eighth, but couldn't get any meaningful rallies going, and they lost the game 9-5.
