Bruins Finish Year With Nation's Highest-Scoring Offense

6/30/2023 10:30:00 AM

NEWBERG, Ore. -- After the conclusion of the 2023 NCAA Lacrosse season, the George Fox women's lacrosse team has been named the scoring offense statistical champions for the first time in program history.

The prolific Bruin offense scored 363 goals — the highest number in program history — in just 19 games, good for an average of 19.11 goals per game. Against Northwest Conference opponents, the Bruins never scored less than 18 goals and averaged 20.7 goals per game en route to their seventh consecutive undefeated NWC season.

Part of the reason for the efficient offense was a bevy of weapons for head coach Katie Brand to utilize. Though they led the nation in goals, no individual goal-scorer was in the top 50 in the country; instead, six players scored 40 goals or more. Freshman Ava Bluhm led the way for the Bruins with 71 goals, while Marena Tharpe, Kyra Barnes, Olivia Geyling, Carleigh DeLapp, and Lana Davis all scored at least 43.

Lots of goal scorers lead to a quick-passing offense: in addition to the highest-scoring offense in the country, the Bruins finished with the second-highest assist per game number in the country with 10.58. The Fox women dished out 201 assists on their 363 goals, with Barnes the top-passing Bruin with 46.

Fox wrapped up its 2023 campaign with its seventh consecutive undefeated Northwest Conference season and fourth straight postseason appearance, finishing with a 17-2 record, 11 All-NWC players, and four All-Region players. The Bruin season came to a close with a 24-7 loss to the second-highest scoring team in the nation in Pomona-Pitzer in the second round of the NCAA Tournament — the fourth straight NCAA appearance for the team.
