Bruins Fall in Heavyweight Matchup Against Whitworth

NEWBERG, Ore. — After a dominating first half, the Bruins fell just short in the second half, shooting 1-21 from deep in the second half, and fighting hard but ultimately falling short, 80-73.

How It Happened
The Bruins dominated the Pirates in the first half, taking a commanding 23-13 by the halfway point of the half. The Bruins got off to a hot start, with James Moore and Momo Stokes getting it done through the air, while Samuel Stewart IV getting it done under the basket. Moore himself came out on fire, scoring the first seven points of the game en route to a 15-point first-half performance. Though the Pirates tried to hang with Fox, the Bruins had the momentum throughout the half to take a 44-34 lead into halftime.

The second half started a little slower for the Bruins, who stuck to their lead until the Pirates overtook them six minutes into the second half. Fox fell ice cold from the field in the second half; a triple from Momo Stokes with 2:45 left in the half was the only made trey of the period, with the Bruins shooting 4.7% (1-21) from deep. Whitworth took advantage of down Bruin shooting, embarking on a 17-2 run midway through the quarter to take a nine point lead.

Though the Bruins brought it back to within two in the closing minutes of the half thanks to seven straight points from Samuel Stewart IV, the Pirates managed to hold late. Fox finished the game with four offensive rebounds and five straight misses from deep in the waning seconds of the game, falling, 73-80.

Top Performances
Momo Stokes and James Moore lead the offense for the Bruins with 18 points each, while Samuel Stewart IV clocked in at 16 points to aid in the efforts for the Bruins. Stokes and Moore also combined for 8-9 performance from the free throw line.. On defense, Stewart finished with a double-double thanks to 10 rebounds, while Moore recorded the only block of the game. Jett Briceno and Austin Clark also recorded two steals to aid the Bruins effort.

Coach's Thoughts
"Tough loss, obviously," Bruin head coach Maco Hamilton said, "Much credit to Whitworth, I thought they made some excellent second half adjustments that put us on our heels, and compromised what had worked well for us in the first half.  We never recovered from that."

What It Means
The Bruins improve to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play, and hope to improve that record in their next game tomorrow against Whitman at home.

Whats Next
The Bruins take on the Blues tomorrow in Newberg at 6:00 p.m.
