NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox men's tennis team hosted their first home match of the spring season on Friday afternoon. The Bruins took on Division I Seattle University, losing 6-1.
How It Happened
Vahag Pashayan and Lars Schamassmann teamed up in the number one spot to take on the Redhawks' number one doubles team. The two were able to challenge the Redhawks but could not win the match, 6-4. On court two,
Hunter Fujimori and
Eli Mizerski paired up to take on Seattle's Julian Worn and Michael Frank. The team did not get the win, losing 6-3. In the final doubles match-up,
Alle Banna and
Jackson Whittaker did not get the win, losing by the same score, 6-3.
Heading into the singles matches, the Bruins would pick up games in all of their matches.
Eli Mizerski had the tough challenge of taking on the number one seed for the Redhawks. Mizkerski would play a competitive match but lost, 6-2, 6-4.
Vahag Pashayan came out well in the first set of his match, winning, 6-1. Pashayan could not finish the match off, losing the following two sets, 6-3, 6-1. On court three
Hunter Fujimori was defeated, 6-0, 6-1.
Lars Schmassmann fell to Veselin Kiselkov, 6-1, 6-2.
Alle Banna was the lone Bruin to win his match. Banna would take down Yu-Han Hsieh, 7-5, 6-2.
Jackson Whittaker lost his match, 6-2, 6-0.
Coach's Thoughts
"Our opponents came out strong today, and our team fell short in terms of energy and intensity," said interim head coach
Mitchell Miyashiro, "We have a lot to work on, and this match will be a great learning point moving into our season."
What's Next
The Bruins will return to the court against another tough Division I opponent in Portland State University on February 18th. That match will be in Beaverton, Ore., at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The match is set to start at 10:00 a.m.
