CLAREMONT, Calif. – Playing their third straight nationally ranked team, the George Fox men's tennis team beat No. 17 Southwestern, 5-2, on Saturday in the Stag-Hen Invitational.
How It Happened
In doubles, the Bruins duo of
Eli Mizerski and
Vahag Pashayan lost 8-7 in a tightly contested battle in the number one spot. On court two,
Zach Moore and
Ikuho Ebisu teamed up to win 6-2. At number three doubles the duo of
Hunter Fujimori and
Lars Schmassmann won over their opponents 7-5. Fox headed into singles play with one point secured from doubles play.
Eli Mizerski looked to recreate his success from Friday afternoon in number one singles. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Mizerski came back to win set two, 6-4. Despite his efforts, Mizerski fell in the final set 6-4.
Vahag Pashayan dominated his match against Ashton Ellis, securing a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Hunter Fujimori continued the Bruins momentum with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win over Bernado Clemente, while
Alle Banna clinched a hard-fought victory against Joseph Snyman with scores of 6-1, 7-6. The drama reached its peak in the sixth singles match, where
Jackson Whittaker emerged with a victory over Ryan Flanagan with a dramatic win. After losing the first set 6-4, Whittaker won the second set, 6-4. Whitaker saved four match points to take the tiebreaker, 18-16.
Coach's Thoughts
"This weekend, we came ready to compete," said Bruin coach
Mitchell Miyashiro, "And despite playing in different conditions, everyone adjusted and found ways to make it work. We learned a lot from this trip and are ready to make the adjustments needed going forward."
What's Next
The Bruins will travel home for a week of practice before heading back to Claremont, California, for spring break. The team will face No. 15 Johns Hopkins on Sunday, March 24th, at 1:00 p.m.
