ST. LOUIS -- In just their first season of STUNT competition, the George Fox Bruins are headed to Division III STUNT Nationals.
The first STUNT program in the Pacific Northwest and the only Division III program west of Texas, the Bruins faced a unique schedule en route to their qualification — not playing a single D-III team over the season.
Instead, Fox faced some of the top teams across Division II and Club, including reigning national champions in Cal Poly and Jessup, to help pad their resume. Over the season, the Bruins faced six NAIA teams, one Division II school, and four highly-ranked club teams.
"To make Nationals our first year as a STUNT team is extremely rewarding," Bruin program director
Reba McLennan said, "I can't express how proud of our athletes and coaching staff I am. We are humbled and hungry for what this program can do and are excited to continue to make history."
Fox was one of four teams that qualified for the Division III Championship, alongside Alma, Hiram, and Muskingum. With the appearance, the Bruins become the first team west of Texas to qualify for nationals. The four teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament in St. Louis, Mo., with Fox entering as the fourth seed.
The Bruins' first opponent, Alma, will be a tall order — the Scots have beaten their Division III conference opponents by a combined score of 70-0 and enter the tournament as back-to-back-to-back champions.
On the other side of the bracket, Hiram finished the season with a 9-6 record and a 7-3 mark in the Great Midwest Conference. Muskingum played 10 games on the year, including one 22-0 loss to Alma, and enters with a 6-4 record.
A lot works against the Bruins on paper: a 3-8 record for a school in their first season as a program. But a hefty schedule, a team on the rise, and most of all, belief, have the team ready to shock the world.
And make more history.Â
