Fox to Face Redlands in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Second Time the Two Teams Will Meet This Season

5/6/2024 4:46:00 PM

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The NCAA Division III men's tennis championship draws have been announced, and the No. 41 George Fox Bruins have their opponent locked in for their fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance.

Fox will travel to California to face No. 19 Redlands in a bracket hosted by No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. UC Santa Cruz will also be in the same pod of four teams — the group in California will be the lone four-team pod in the entire 46-team NCAA Tournament.

The team is no stranger to four-team pods in the tournament; after playing — in 2021, Fox won their opening round games, taking down Oglethorpe and Carnegie Melton to advance to the first Elite Eight in program history.

The Second Round contest between Redlands and George Fox will be the second of the season, with the two teams meeting on March 25 in the Bruins' Spring Break tournament. Though Fox lost the game, 0-7, the games were close: the duo of Lars Schmassmann and Eli Mizerski won one doubles match, while Schmassmann, Hunter Fujimori, and Nanase Ebisu all pushed their opponents to a third set.

Fox enters the tournament after winning the Northwest Conference tournament despite battling through adversity; interim head coach Mitchell Miyashiro stepped into the role just two weeks before the season's start. The Bruins took down Whitman, 5-1, to clinch their fourth consecutive NCAA appearance.

Four Bruins were named to the All-NWC team, with Mizerski winning Northwest Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore.

The two teams will square off on Friday, with start time TBD. The winner of the match will face the winner of No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and UC Santa Cruz in the Sweet Sixteen. Fox played both CMS and UCSC this season, falling to the Stags, 0-7, but beating the Banana Slugs, 8-1.

Daily recaps will be available on the Bruins' website and live coverage — stats and video — will be linked to the team's schedule page.
