9/27/2024 8:28:00 PM

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Bruins kicked off the ITA Northwest Regional Championships this weekend, facing the rest of the conference with All-American hopes on the line.

How it Happened
Doubles:

Four duos took the court in the round of 32 to kick off the tournament. Coming off a championship appearance at the Pacific 5 Way tournament last weekend, Kalli Wiker and Riley Bobkiewicz continued their dominance at the ITA's. They took down Pacific's Mia Yamaguchi and Valentina Casab-Klescova 8-3, then swept Whitworth's Hannah Wells and Libertad Sarmiento 8-0 to make it to the quarter-finals.

Abigail Bond and Juhree Kizziar, as well as Ariana Rader and Cassey Hitch both put up a fight in their first-round matches. Kizziar and Bond dropped their match 8-6 to Whitworth's Gracie Smyley and Faith Kurt, giving the eighth-ranked twosome a run for their money. Rader and Hitch also saw a first-round exit, getting beat 8-5 by Whitworth's Jordan Turner-Esposito and Paige Oliver.

Sophie and Shanah Denham join Wiker and Bobkiewicz in the quarter-finals after breaking seed in the first two rounds. They beat Pacific's Morgan Wagoner and Molly Sawyer 8-3 to start the day, adding another win to their belt over Lewis and Clark's Susanna Anand Charlotte Makoni 8-4 in the round of 16.

Singles:

The Bruins kicked off singles play following two rounds of doubles play, with six Bruins in the A Main Draw, and two in the B Main Draw.

Shanah Denham kept her streak unbeaten on Friday, taking down Pacific's Tiara Young 6-3, 6-4. Her sister wasn't quite so lucky, narrowly losing her match to  Whitworth's Paige Oliver 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Bond got matched up with Lewis and Clark's number four seeded Susanna Anand in the draw, with Anand taking the match 6-0, 6-1. Rader had the craziest round of singles, going up against Lewis and Clark's Allison Gabelman. Despite fighting her way to extra sets in both games, Rader dropped the match 7-6 (1), 7-5.

Wiker and Bobkiewicz both won their singles matches as top eight-ranked individuals, reaching the round of 16 with ease. Wiker took down Pacific's Mia Yamaguchi 6-4, 6-2, and Bobkiewicz took down Linfield's Samantha Baltz 7-5, 6-1.

In the B Main Draw, Cassey Hitch won her match against Willamette's Fiona Beardsley in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-0. Kizziar also got it done against Puget Sound's Hyla Chatham 6-1, 6-0.

Coach's Thoughts
"The team played well today," Said Head Coach Rick Cruz. "We won most of the matches we should have and got a big win from Sophie and Shanah in doubles over a seeded team. I can't wait to see how we play tomorrow!"
