Bruins Make Deep Runs in Day Two of ITA Northwest Regionals

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Bruins kicked off day two of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships today, highlighted by a doubles semifinal appearance by Kalli Wiker and Riley Bobkiewicz.

How it Happened
Doubles: 

The Bruins kicked off their day with doubles, with Wiker and Bobkiewicz defeating Whitman's Jules Thompson and Erica Mock 8-5 in the quarter-finals. Their run in the tournament came to an end in the semis, though, after a loss to number one-seeded Whitman's Arianna Castellanos and Teleya Blunt 8-2. The Whitman duo will play for the championship tomorrow morning. 

After making it to the main draw quarter-finals, Sophia Denham and Shanah Denham dropped their doubles match to Whitman's Jin Yu and Nana Vang 8-1. 

In the doubles consolation bracket, Abigail Bond and Juhree Kizziar found success in their opening match. They defeated Whitman's Piper Rylander and Kaylah Tan 8-2 to get to the consolation quarterfinals. Their doubles run ended when they faced Puget Sound's Paige Shinall and Kaylee Yamada, dropping the match 8-2.

Ariana Rader and Cassey Hitch also started their day in the doubles consolation bracket. Similar to Bond and Kizziar, the duo won their first match 8-4, defeating the Loggers pairing of Ginger Parker and Zoe Hughes. Willamette's Richelle Suzuki and Eva Leif took on the Bruin pair next, defeating them 8-6 in a close quarterfinals match. 

Singles:

Three Bruins started their day in the A Main Draw round of 16, with Wiker making it to the quarter-finals. She defeated Whitman's Vang in her first match, then fell in the quarters to Whitman's Yu 6-3, 6-2.

Bobkiewicz and Sh. Denham both dropped their first match of the day in highly contested sets. Denham faced Whitman's top-eight seeded Castellanos, finishing the match strong in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat. Bobkiwiecz faltered in a three set battle against Whitman's Sascha Wells, with Wells taking the match 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. 

So. Denham, Bond, and Rader all started their singles campaign in the A Main Draw consolation bracket round of 16. All three Bruins were evenly matched up with their opponents, with each match needing a third set to determine the victor. Denham dropped her match 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 to Puget Sound's Yamada, Bond dropped her match 4-6, 6-2, 15-13 to Puget Sound's Shinall, and Rader defeated Linfield's Kaitlyn Canubida 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. Rader dropped her final match of the day, losing a close one to Willamette's Suzuki 7-6 (3), 6-4.

In the B Main Draw, Hitch and Kizziar battled their way through the day. Kizziar dropped her first match of the day to Linfield's Emily Redwood 6-4, 6-4, but bounced back to advance to the B Draw Third Consolation semi-finals with a win over Willamette's Marie Tarrab 6-1, 6-0. 

Hitch Dominated in singles play today, advancing to the B Main Draw semi-finals. She defeated Lewis and Clark's Anna English 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16, continuing her run with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Pios' Kacie Lau. 

Coach's Thoughts
"We had some tough matches, but overall it was another good day," Said Head Coach Rick Cruz. "Kalli and Riley made a great doubles run, and a number of our players have performed well in singles. Hopefully we finish strong tomorrow!" 

What Happens Next
The Bruins take on day three of the ITA Northwest Regionals on Sunday, with matches starting at 9:00 AM in Vancouver, Washington.
