NEWBERG, Ore. -- Following a 1-1 first day at their home tournament, the Pacific Northwest Open, the George Fox STUNT team ended their first-ever competition in Newberg with two wins, picking up 5-4 win over St. Mary's (Ind.) and 16-7 victory over Muskingum.
How It Happened
Against the Belles of St. Mary's, the Bruins played a modified game against the first-year program; rather than a 16-round game that featured four performances per quarter, the teams played an eight-round game that had two per quarter.
In the shortened game, the Bruins took a 1-0 lead after the first quarter and a 2-1 lead into the break, but the game was tight throughout the second half. After a challenge from the Belles, the Bruins were up just 5-4 heading into the final fourth-quarter routine. Coach
Reba McLennan made a strategic move, calling routine seven — a routine St. Mary's did not have. With the Belles unable to score a point, the Bruins eked out the victory, 5-4.
Prior to their next game against Muskingum, the Bruins honored their five seniors:
Gabrielle Hill,
Elee Calhoun,
Katie Morgan,
Kiera Woodley, and
Tori Ward. Fox parlayed the excitement of senior day into a successful performance against the Muskies; after dropping the first point, the Bruins locked in, taking a 5-1 lead into the break.
The Bruins continued to stay comfortably ahead of the Muskies, leading 8-2 after three. Though Muskingum scored several points in the fourth, the scoreboard was still all Fox as the Bruins finished out the Pacific Northwest Open with a 16-7 win.
What's It Means
The Bruins improve to 6-6 on the year thanks to a 3-1 weekend in Newberg.
What Happens Next
Fox currently does not have a scheduled game, but the Bruins are currently slated to qualify for the Division III Championships. The Bruins are currently ranked No. 1 in D-III, while the two teams they beat on Saturday, St. Mary's and Muskingum, are each in the top four.
