SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The George Fox track and field team got an early start to their spring break racing with the Klein/Nwaba Combined Events at the Westmont Classic. In total, five Bruin men and five Bruin women competed in the decathlon and heptathlon.
Top Performances - Day One
Blake Smith topped the field in the men's 100 meter event, running an electric time of 11 seconds to kick off his decathlon campaign. Teammate
Thomas McMillan also secured a podium finish with his mark of 11.31 seconds, good enough for third.Â
Smith also picked up a podium in the men's long jump, finishing in second place with a best jump of 6.56m.
In the men's shot put, McMillan clinched Fox's second event win of the day with his throw of 12.75 meters, which was almost a full meter ahead of second place.Â
Max Ashour took home third place for Fox in the men's high jump, clearing 1.87m to secure the podium finish.
Smith then continued his strong form with a win in the men's 400 meter event, coming in with a time of 49.38s. Through five events,
Blake Smith and Tom McMillan sit in second and third place in the overall decathlon, with 3456 and 3431 points, respectively.
In the women's heptathlon,
Jenna Huntsman picked up Fox's first podium of the day in the women's 100m hurdles; finishing second with a time of 15.20 seconds.
Breeauna O'Rear clinched a podium finish in the women's shot put, throwing 11.25m to place second. Through the first four events completed on Day One, O'Rear sat in third place in the overall standings, with 2,785 total points.
Top Performances - Day Two
Blake Smith finished strong on day two, placing in the Men's Decathlon. He did exceedingly well in his field events to finish the decathlon, with a 33.34m in discus, and a height of 4.25m in pole vault — finishing with a total of 6,445 points.
In third place overall was
Thomas McMillan, finishing with a score of 6,293. The senior totaled a 35.65m in the discus, the farthest distance of any competitor, and 2.95m in pole vault to round out his podium finish.
Breeauna O'Rear finished first in the Women's 800m with a time of 2:23.21, which placed her in fourth overall in the Women's Heptathlon. O'Rear locked in 4,622 points for Fox, the seventh-most in program history.
Jenna Huntsman placed sixth overall with a 26.42 seconds in the 200m dash — finishing with 4,456 points total, the 10th most all-time.
What Comes Next
The Bruins will stay in Santa Barbara, Calif. as all athletes compete in the Westmont Warrior Classic on Saturday, March 22nd.
