PORTLAND, Ore. – The George Fox men's and women's track teams each took control of the NWC Championship meet, scoring 215 and 219 points respectively, both over 45 points ahead of second place Whitworth.
Top Performances
The Bruins got their first podium of the day in the men's 1500 meter, where
Aidan Arthur ran a 3:51.69 to take first and add his name to the list of Bruins in the All-NWC pool.
Ellie Rising won the women's 1500 meter, running a 4:35.79, a full three seconds ahead of the second place finisher, and earning All-NWC honors.
After finishing first in the prelims of the men's 110 meter hurdles,
Blake Smith finished the job in the finals, running a 14.65, a personal best and good enough for first place. In the women's 100 meter hurdles finals,
Ayahna Bahati and Jenna Huntsmen finished first and second, respectively. Bahati ran a personal record 14.33, and Huntsmen a 15.18. All three runners are now on the All-NWC team.
Karys Gates edged out a Linfield runner for third place in a thrilling finish, running a 58.73 compared to the fourth place 58.75, as she earned a spot on the podium.
Arthur got on another podium in the men's 800 meter final, finishing second with a time of 1:53.78. On the women's side of the 800 meter,
Ellie Rising grabbed a first place finish, and
Annalise Gonzales finished in third. Rising ran a 2:10.99 and Gonzales a personal best 2:16.41 as she earned All-NWC honors.
Huntsman ran a personal best 1:04.20 in the women's 400 meter hurdles, good enough for third in the event as she picked up her second podium finish of the day.
In the Men's 1500 meter run,
Andrew Ross ran a personal best 14:41 as he finished in second place and earned All-NWC honors.
Breanna Schmitt and
Sarah Pullen added to their impressive weekend and took second and third respectively in the women's 1500 meter run. Schmitt with 17:47, and Pullen with a 17:54.
On the final event of the day on the track,
Max Ashour, Tom McMillan, Smith, and
Larry Trefry took home first place in the men's 400 meter relay with a time of 3:19.22 in a thrilling finish, edging out Willamette by just two tenths of a second. Huntsmen,
Breeauna O'Rear, Gates, and Rising finished in second place in the women's 4x400, giving the women's team one more podium finish on the track at the meet.
On the field – which was held at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. –
James King finished first in the men's high jump, with a jump of 6-06.75 feet.
Brecken VandenHoek took third in the women's high jump 5-03.25 feet, a personal best.
What It Means
The Bruins continued their dominant run on the track, picking up their eighth straight NWC Conference championship on both sides.
What Comes Next
As the season winds down, the Bruins will send some athletes to the Oregon State University High Performance meet on Friday, May 2 at Corvallis Ore.
