FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- In preparation for the ITAs in the upcoming week, the George Fox women's tennis season, the Bruins traveled to Forest Grove for the Pacific 5-Way Tournament.
How It Happened
All four of the Bruin players played in the Red Flight.
Juhree Kizziar and
Nicole Schnurbusch
played as a team while
Sophie Denham and
Riley Bobkiewicz played together. The two duos played a doubles match before each played a singles match. The team who won
two of the three matches moved on.
In doubles play against Lewis & Clark, Kizziar and Schnurbusch fell in a close 6-7 (4-7) matchup against the Pios' Taylor Stadjuhar and Anna English before Kizziar beat Stadjuhar 6-2, 6-0 in singles. Schnurbusch then fell to English, 6-1, 6-3, as Lewis & Clark moved forward, 2-1.
The duo then won against Willamette, losing their doubles match but winning their singles. Kizziar beat Sofia Spencer 6-1, 6-4, while Schnurbusch beat Eva Lief 8-7 (8-6). Following the win, the two wrapped up their day with three losses to Pacific.
Bobkiewicz and Denham, meanwhile, recovered from a doubles loss to Willamette, with two big sweeps in singles play to beat the Bearcats, 2-1. Bobkiewicz won her match, 6-3, 6-0, while Denham won 6-0, 6-1. Against Lewis & Clark, the duo beat Susanna Anand and Charlotte Makoni, 6-4, and recovered from a Bobkiewicz loss; Denham downed Makoni, 6-3, 6-2, to move on to the final.
In the final against Pacific's Stella Nishimura and Chloe Takahashi, Fox lost 4-6. Bobkiewicz won a thriller over Nishimura, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6, but a tough loss for Denham ended the day for the Bruins.Â
