NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox baseball team continued their four-game series against Centenary with a doubleheader—the Bruins lost 9-3 in game one, but had a strong 4-1 victory in the second game.
How It Happened - Game One
Centenary scored first in the first inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Bruins were quick to respond. After
Joey Marasco reached via error and
Jayson Au Hoy walked,
BJ Tokushima recorded the first hit of the day, doubling to left field to score two—bumping ahead of Centenary, 2-1.
Centenary tied the score after they scored a run in the top of second, and then broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning that featured a homer, advancing the score above Fox, 5-2.
In the sixth inning, the Bruins struck back, as
Austin Stalwick hit his second career triple on a shot to center field, scoring Tokushima — cutting the score to 5-3. Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring for GFU, as the Bruins failed to earn a hit in the final three innings. The Gents would score two runs in the seventh and two in the ninth to put Fox to bed, 9-3.
How It Happened - Game Two
The second game was slow on the scoreboard for the first three innings, as neither team scored; however, it was two different stories for the teams to get to that zero — while starting pitcher
Aidan Rady retired the first nine batters for Fox, the Bruins loaded the bases twice but couldn't punch in a run.
Centenary's first hit of the game scored the first run in the fourth inning. But Fox bided their time, and bounced back stronger than ever, taking advantage of several Centenary walks. Fox tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of sixth on a Marasco RBI single to center field, scoring
Brennan Bates. The Bruins weren't done yet, scoring on an unusual play. While Marasco was caught in a pickle on a pick off attempt, the freshman held off the tag long enough for Oshiro to score the run and have it count — so while Marasco went down on a rare 136341 putout, the Bruins were up 2-1.
Finally, in the seventh inning, Tokushima sealed the deal with a two home-run to left field claiming two RBIs for the third straight game. After
Andrew Miller threw 2.1 scoreless innings,
Cole Schmidt came in to seal the deal with the save, clinching the Bruins at least a split of the series.
