Caleb Smith Down's 31-Year Program Decathlon Mark as Fox Competes in Cali

Breaks Head Coach John Smith's 1995 Record

REDLANDS, Calif. -- The George Fox Track and Field team performed well on day two of the Redlands Multis as well as the host Invitational, making moves forward into the season and placing well for the two-day event, as well as breaking a big record on the way.

Top Performances
For the Men's Decathlon, Blake Smith started the day off high, placing second in the 110 Hurdles and marking a time of 15.02. Right behind him was Caleb Smith, locking in a time of 15.51 seconds in fourth — kicking off a record run for the senior.

Caleb Smith then came in fourth place for the 1500 run, crossing the finish line in 5:02.54, while Blake Smith made his way right on his heels — 5:24.11 in fifth.

For the field events, Caleb Smith claimed first place with a mark of 127' 7" in the Discuss Throw, and then took first place in the Javelin Throw, resulting in a 172' 0" mark.

Blake Smith and Caleb Smith both tied in the Pole Vault event—Blake taking the first place position and Caleb taking second thanks to faults, both achieving 14' 1 ¼". Meanwhile, Blake Smith came in third place at 147' 7" in the Javelin Throw. For the event, Caleb Smith took home the decathlon record, recording a program record 7170 — just 32 points ahead of former program record-holder, his own head coach John Smith.

Continuing to the Women's Heptathlon, Makaylah Johnson placed first in Long Jump, landing in the sand at 17' 11", while also taking the win in the 800 M Dash with a time of 2:31.98. 

Savannah Johnstone came in third with 16' 2 ¼". Johnstone also won the Haptathlon Javelin Throw, marking 105' 3", while Jenna Huntsman was right behind her in second place with a mark of 102' 2"—Huntsman also came in second in the 800 with a 2:35.28.

As the Invitational kicked off, the track events began with the Men's 3000 Steeplechase—Eli Krueger attaining third place with a time of 10:47.10. 

Isaac Montanes placed third as well in the Men's 1500 Run, locking in a time of 4:00.55, while Abbie Goodwin placed second for the Women's 1500, her time being 5:03.18

In the Men's 800 Dash, Caleb Doddington came in second overall, carrying out his 1:55.62 time, as Hope Bridge came in first for the Women's 800—2:18.42. Finally, Junior Chloe Cook took first for the Women's 3000 steeplechase with an 10:26.53.

For the Invitational field events, Bruins came in each top three for the Men's Javelin Throw—Gracen Sandoz in first with a beautiful mark of 179' 4", Joey Holloway in second with a close 178' 8", and Emmett Mihelich making 174' 3". 

In the Women's Hammer Throw, Sophomore Evan Roberts made 153' 0" in third place, while Kristian Carrington placed first in the Men's Triple Jump, landing at 46' 2".

Owen Gurney and Drew Pierson came in second and third in the Men's Long Jump (Gurney in second with 23' 0 ¾", and Pierson in third with 22' 9 ¾"). Eventually, Janice Hellesto came in third for the Women's Long Jump making a gorgeous mark of 18' 0 ¼".

Then, Angela Hawkins flew with a height of 10' 11 ¾", second place in the Women's Pole Vault, while Kylie Morais placed third with the same height. Meanwhile, Luke Nelson came in third place for the Men's Pole Vault, getting a mark of 15' 5".

For the final event, Madison Wu claimed a solid 5' 3" mark in the Women's High Jump, while Dylan Brown got 6' 2 ¾" for the men, finishing the long day off strong for the Bruins.

What Comes Next
One Bruin will make their way over to Westmont, Calif. to compete in the Westmont Classic on Thursday, March 26, while the rest of the team will be in McMinnville, Ore. for the Jenn Boyman Classic on April 4.
