PORTLAND, Ore. -- The George Fox baseball team tracked both a win and a loss in their doubleheader against the Lewis and Clark River Otters. In game one, they pulled out with a close 4-3 dub, but couldn't hold it for game two, losing 7-1.
How It Happened - Game One
Garrett Strube was the first to make contact for Fox, a simple single to left center.
Evan Balingit tracked with a single of his own,
Brennan Bates followed, and was hit by a pitch. When
Adam Fulton stepped up to bat, Strube was now on third and, thanks to Fulton's sacrifice fly, found home plate, putting the Bruins up one.
The second held no runs for either team, thanks to starting pitcher
Lucas Plenert striking out two; meanwhile, The River Otters tied up the game with a home run in the third, 1-1. In the fourth inning,
Andre Butler reached first on a fielder's choice after
Gabe DeBenedetto walked.
Dylon Poulin was up next and walked, then Strube did the exact same with the bases loaded, bringing home a run (2-1). L&C answered with a run of their own, not letting the Bruins keep the lead, 2-2.
The fifth was deja vu for both teams; Fox scored a run, followed by L&C, keeping it tied, 3-3. For the Bruins, Fulton stayed on second as DeBenedetto singled up the middle to score Fulton. In the sixth, Poulin doubled before advancing to third on a Strube hit. Balingit showed up and singled, giving Fulton an opportunity to score and keep the Bruins up one, 4-3.
The seventh showed no offensive action, as well as the eighth, both teams finding three quick outs. The ninth was similar, nothing for Fox, and on the defensive end,
Andrew Miller struck out two to earn the save and clinch the 4-3 win.
How It Happened - Game Two
The River Otters came out with a different sense of play for game two. Bates and Balingit advanced to bases to start, but no opportunity to capitalize followed. L&C scored the first run, making it 1-0. Fox tied it up in the second, after
Declan Corrigan doubled and scored on a DeBenedetto sacrifice fly, earning an RBI. The Bruins' defense kept the Otters to a short bottom of the inning.
The third held three straight outs for both sides. In the fourth, the Otters' defense was consistent, and their offense pulled through, two runs successful, 3-1. The next two innings showed three more runs for L&C, after their second and third bases were loaded and completed, then a home run, putting them up by five (6-1).
The Bruins finally found a bit of power in the seventh, with Corrigan and Fulton finding bases; however, Fox still couldn't add any runs to their score. The eighth was where L&C scored the final run of the game, Evyn Lewis getting the RBI. Fox played the final inning, but didn't complete anything to change the final score, a 7-1 loss.
