NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox track & field team showed out for both days of the Northwest Conference Multis. On the women's side,
Makaylah Johnson took home honors in the heptathlon while
Caleb Smith won the men's decathlon; these efforts helped the Bruin women score 19 crucial points and the men 16 as the Bruins aim for yet another NWC Track and Field Championship.
Top Performers - Day One
In the women's heptathlon, two Bruins currently hold the first two places overall. Coming in first is Freshman
Makaylah Johnson, landing in the top three for each event. She got first in the 100-meter hurdles, with 14.54. For high jump, she jumped a personal best of 5-03, and threw 32-04 for shot put, coming in second for both. The final event of the day was the 200-meter, and she ran 26.62, taking third. Her day one total score is 2903.
Second is
Jenna Huntsman, with 2678. Her best event was the 200-meter, coming in just behind first, 26.52. For shot put, she saw third place, a mark of 32-03.75. She took fourth in the 100m hurdles, running 15.08. Finally, for high jump, she cleared 4-10.25, tied for fourth.
Savannah Johnstone came in running in the 100m hurdles, finishing third with 15.07. She is sitting sixth overall.
Lola Heide tied Huntsman in the high jump, currently residing in ninth place.
For the men's decathlon, the two Bruins competing sit in the top three, both with the last name Smith.
Caleb Smith hangs at second with a score of 3691, with
Blake Smith following in third, 3470.
Caleb claimed second in three events. For the long jump, he got 22-03.25, high jump, 6-01.5, and in the 400-meter ran a speedy personal best of 49.24. In the other running event (100-meter), he finished third, just mere milliseconds behind second place, with 11.14. In the shot put, he came out at fifth, throwing 36-04.25.
Blake placed his highest in almost all the same events as Caleb, in second and third. His 400m time of 50.33 landed him in second place. The 100m was a solid 11.20, fourth place. He jumped 21-00.75 (long) and 6-00.75 (high), earning third in both. For shot put, he threw 33-00.25, finishing seventh.
Top Performers - Day Two
For the Women's Heptathalon Long Jump,
Makaylah Johnson claimed the first place victory with a solid mark of 5.34m. Then, Abigail Sampson finished fifth place—marking a 5.00m.
Savannah Johnstone and
Jenna Huntsman came in sixth and seventh—Johnstone with a mark of 4.95m, Huntsman with a 4.90m distance.
Johnstone and Huntsman then placed fifth and sixth in the Women's Javelin Throw, with Johnstone performing a 29.60m, while Huntsman had a mark of 28.45m.
Later on,
Natalie Langenberg ran a personal best of 2:37.26, finishing in second place overall in the Women's 800m.
Then, in the Men's Decathlon 110m,
Blake Smith placed first with a strong time of 14.92, while
Caleb Smith finished a minute later—15.96 in third place.
Caleb Smith then achieved first place in the Men's Discus, locking in 38.15m, first place in the Men's Pole Vault as well, with a mark of 4.25m, and second place in the Men's Javelin Throw—52.01m.
Blake Smith placed seventh at 30.96m for discus, also placing fourth in pole vault, logging a height of 3.95m, and finishing fifth place at 37.87m in the javelin throw.
Finally, in the Men's 1500m,
Caleb Smith crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 5:12.22, while
Blake Smith followed right behind him, claiming his personal best at 5:15.57.
Smith's third place finish pushed him just in front of Willamette's Steeley Mucken to win the decathlon with a total of 6852.
Blake Smith placed third in the dec with a 6299. For the heptathlon,
Makaylah Johnson was victorious with a 4586, with
Jenna Huntsman placing third with a 4242.
What Comes Next
The Lady Bruins will travel to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the Oregon Preview on Friday, April 17, while other athletes will travel north to Portland, Ore. to compete in the L&C Larry Byerly.
