Bruins Prep For Conference With Meet in Portland

4/18/2026 9:46:00 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The George Fox track & field team prepped for conference competition at the Lewis and Clark Larry Byerly Invite. After Day one was set at Linfield University with just throwers competing, the Bruins headed to Portland to compete in the Larry Byerly.

Top Performers
The only two events on Friday were the javelin and hammer throw. The Bruins had limited competitors, Issac Ellis taking ninth place in the men's javelin, earning 154-11 on his first attempt.

Evan Roberts would go on to have the throw of the meet for the Bruins in the hammer throw, winning the event with a mark of 166-07 — nearly 17 feet better than her next competitor. Roberts' throw was a personal mark, and the second-best in program history.

When Saturday rolled around, many more Bruins came out to Portland to compete. Fresh off of a NWC Student-Athlete of the Week award, Carson Tapia placed fourth in the 100m with a 10.66, before finishing third in the 200m with a 21.39.

Larry Trefry Jr. barely snuck in a top 10 position, placing 10th in the 400m with a personal best of 50.61, while Jefferson Smith placed ninth in the 800m with his time of 1:56.30.

The first woman to earn a top 10 finish on the day was Chloe Cook, who placed ninth in the 1500m with a time of 4:45.48, a personal-best mark.

In the field events, Joshua Taylor finished eighth place in the discus, throwing a mark of 145-06. Taylor would place in the top 10 in one additional event, finishing in second with a 51-10.50 in the shot put, a personal best that is second-best in program history.

Roberts, meanwhile, followed her hammer mark the day before with a personal best in the women's discus, placing ninth with a 117-02, before ending her day with a seventh in the shot put.

Fox concluded the day with several top finishes in the pole vault; for the men, Luke Nelson (3rd, 15-04.50) and Zachary Miller (9th, 14-04.75) each finished in the top 10, while Angela Hawkins (3rd, 11-03.00), Anna Wilson (7th, 11-03.00), and Kaylie Morais (9th, 11-03.00) did so for the women.

What Comes Next
The moment of truth will come for the Bruins as they travel to Spokane, Wash. from April 25-26 for the NWC Championships. There, Fox seeks their ninth straight conference title — and the Bruins are already off to a solid start thanks to their performances at the NWC Multis from April 13-14.
