NEWBERG, Ore. - Dylan Durrell scored to break a second-half tie
and Kyle Story added an insurance goal that proved crucial as the
George Fox University Bruins hung on to defeat the Willamette
University Bearcats 3-2 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer game
Tuesday afternoon here at Morse Field.
George Fox struck first 28:45 into the game as Keith Marshall
raced down the right sightline, turned the corner, and centered
perfectly to Matt Gurlides, who headed the ball into the left
corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Willamette
tied it at 40:20 when Bruin keeper Kyle Putnam came out to
challenge the Bearcats' Ivan Gutierrez, who was making a run toward
the right side of the box. Putnam deflected a pass attempt, but the
ball bounced behind him, where the Bearcats' Austin Buell collected
it after racing past everyone and scored his first goal of the
season on an easy tap to the unprotected net.
After being out-shot 9-5 in the first half, the Bruins stepped
up their offense in the second half and took 16 shots, finally
breaking the tie at 66:14 when Gurlides crossed from the left to
Durrell, who hit his third goal of the year from straight on 15
yards out. The Bruins made it 3-1 when Garrett Blizzard drove the
right baseline and centered to Kyle Story, who shot the ball past
Willamette keeper Mark Bennett for his third score of the season.
The Bearcats narrowed their deficit to 3-2 at 83:05 when Nick
Forbes made a run to the left, threaded through two defenders in
the box, and rolled the ball past Putnam, who was stepping out to
help stop the run. Willamette got one last shot to tie with 30
seconds left, but Casey Dineen's header attempt was wide left.
Putnam, playing for the first time in a month after being
sidelined with a concussion, made six saves for the Bruins. Bennett
had four stops in goal for the Bearcats.
George Fox evened its record at 7-7-2 overall and improved to
3-7-1 in the conference. Willamette fell to 1-14-1 with its 10th
straight setback and remained winless in the league at 0-10-1. The
Bruins go to Pacific University Sunday while the Bearcats visit
Linfield College Saturday, both games at 1:30 p.m.
