TACOMA, Wash. - In a matchup of Northwest Conference polar
opposites, the league's stingiest defense trumped the team that
takes more shots than anyone else as the 7th-ranked University of
Puget Sound Loggers took a 2-0 win over the George Fox University
Bruins in men's soccer action Saturday afternoon here at the East
Athletic Field.
Puget Sound entered the contest 3rd nationally in shutout
percentage (0.86) and 6th in goals-against average (0.28), while
George Fox led the NWC in shots per game (20.6) and corner kicks
(68). The Logger defense, which has allowed only two goals all
season, and keeper Pete Van Sant limited the Bruins to nine shots
on the day, three of them on goal, and four corners while posting
their seventh shutout in nine games.
George Fox's defense was almost as tough, allowing only 10 shots
to the Loggers, nine on goal, seven of which were saved by keeper
Jake Maguire. Two of the shots snuck through, however, the first by
Micah Wenzel in the 19th minute and the second by Byron Conforti on
a header off an assist from Mark Conrad in the 39th minute.
Both teams return to conference play Sunday at 2:30 p.m., George
Fox (5-4-2, NWC 1-4-1) visiting Linfield College and Puget Sound
(7-0-1, NWC 4-0-1) hosting Pacific University.
