WALLA WALLA, Wash. - An efficient Whitman College offense picked
up four goals on only five shots on goal all game, giving the
home-standing Missionaries a 4-1 win over the visiting George Fox
University Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match
Sunday afternoon here at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Steven Phillips gave Whitman a 1-0 lead with less that two
minutes left in the first half, notching his first goal of the
season with assists from Andy Huntington and John Rue at the 43:41
mark. One minute into the second half, Huntington stole a pass in
the midfield and beat George Fox keeper Jake Maguire for a 2-0
Missionary lead.
Phillips, assisted by Simon Quay, got his second goal of the
game at the 63:37 mark of the second half. With less than four
minutes to play, Whitman's Jasper Lipton made it 4-0 when he
chipped his first college goal over Maguire's head, with Chris
Dorough assisting on the play.
With less than two minutes remaining, George Fox averted a
shutout when Bret Hamilton scored after a shot by teammate Erich
Hangartner bounced off Whitman keeper James Millikan. It was
Hamilton's second goal of the year. Millikan finished with five
saves and Maguire had one for the Bruins. Whitman outshot George
Fox by a slim 14-12 margin, although it was the Bruins with a 6-5
edge in shots on goal.
George Fox, after starting the season with their second-best
start ever at 4-0-1, is now 4-2-1 and 0-2 in the conference.
Whitman is 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in NWC play. Both teams play
again Saturday, the Bruins hosting Pacific Lutheran University and
the Missionaries going to Pacific University. Both games are set
for 2:30 p.m. following women's games at 12 noon.
