NEWBERG, Ore. - Midfielder Erich Hangartner assisted on all
three George Fox University first-half goals, one short of the
school record for assists in a game, and the Bruin defense posted
its second straight shutout in a 4-0 win over the Walla Walla
College Wolves in a non-conference men's soccer game Monday
afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Bruins dented the scoreboard just 5:31 into the game when
Ryan MacKenzie took a throw-in from the left sideline by
Hangartner, pivoted, and hooked a 30-yarder into the right corner
of the net. Hangartner passed from the left corner to Matt Gurlides
angling to the middle of the box from the right for another score
at 23:10. The Bruins' final score of the opening half came as
Hangartner raced down the left sideline and crossed to Tony Zamora
in the center of the box for a goal at the 31:01 mark.
The early three-goal lead was more than enough for the Bruins'
stellar defense, which allowed only seven shots by the Wolves all
game and only four on goal. Jake Maguire worked the net for the
Bruins in the first half and had three saves while getting the win
to go to 2-0, and Kyle Putnam had one save in the second half in
preserving the shutout.
George Fox added its final goal 1:44 from the end when Dan
Potter passed to Bret Hamilton on the left side of the box, who
drove to the right of keeper Tim Lo and drilled it home. The Bruins
took 36 shots, 21 on goal, with Lo stopping 17 of them.
George Fox (2-0) plays its first road game Thursday when the
Bruins visit Corban College in Salem at 5 p.m. The next game for
Walla Walla (0-1) is Saturday night at Willamette University in
Salem at 8 p.m.
