Box Score
NEWBERG, Ore. – Scoring twice in the first half and
again early in the second half, the 18th-ranked Whitworth
University Pirates built a three-goal lead and made it stand up for
a 3-1 win over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest
Conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at Morse
Field.
The Pirates got on the board at 20:45 in the first half when Brent
Zahn passed down the left sideline to Ben Rotert, who crossed to
Caleb Barnhill in the center just inside the top of the penalty
box. Barnhill quickly popped the ball over the
head of Bruin keeper Jake Maguire, who had come out to challenge
the play, and into the net for his eighth goal of the
season.
Cameron Bushey, the son of Whitworth coach Sean Bushey, notched
his first goal when he drilled a free kick from the left corner of
the penalty box into the far corner just over a minute from the end
of the half. That sent the Pirates into the
break with a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates upped their advantage to three scores early in the
second half when Elly Bulega knocked in his fifth goal of the
season at 51:22, scoring off the rebound of a shot by Taylor Willi
that was blocked by the Bruin defense.
Outshot in the first half 15-3 and 6-1 in shots on goal, the
Bruins finally began clicking on offense in the second half, though
they had ultimately fallen too far behind to catch
up. George Fox was out-shot in the second half
only 9-8, and actually had a 5-3 edge in shots on
goal.
The Bruins spoiled the chance for a Whitworth shutout at 73:13
when Brennan Altringer made a throw-in from the right sideline to
Jon Gutierrez, who lofted a high cross into the penalty box near
the far post, and Brian Story headed it home for his third goal of
the year.
Whitworth out-shot the Bruins 24-11, 9-6 in shots on goal, and had
a 5-1 margin in corner kicks. Maguire made six
saves in goal for the Bruins, while Jeff Srock had five stops for
the Pirates.
