PORTLAND, Ore. - Blistering the nets at a .655 pace while making
19 of 29 first-half shots, the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers
pulled away from the George Fox University Bruins midway through
the first half and coasted to a 90-48 win in Northwest Conference
men's basketball action Friday night here at the Pamplin Sports
Center.
The Bruins have been competitive against almost everyone in the
Northwest Conference this season, holding second-half leads in 10
of their 13 league games and playing eight games decided by four
points or less - but not against the Pioneers, who have totally
dominated both meetings.
George Fox held early leads of 2-0 and 4-2 on baskets by Bryan
O'Connell and Taylor Martin, and were still within a point at 12-11
seven minutes into the game when the Pios took off. Hitting six of
their next seven shots, the home team went on a 15-0 run to go up
27-11 with eight minutes remaining in the half, and upped it to a
20-point bulge at 33-13 on a David Berggren three at 6:45. With
three players in double figures by halftime - Berggren with 11 and
Mark Robinowitz and Tyson Papenfuss with 10 each - the Pios led
48-21 at the break.
In the second half, the Pioneers hit the 30-point margin at
53-23 on a layup by Joey Toboni with 17:16 left in the game, and
hit the 40-point mark at 70-29 on an NBA-range three by Berggren
with 11:16 to go. The final 42-point margin was the Bruins' most
lop-sided setback since another 42-point loss of 94-52 at Whitman
College on Feb. 7, 1997.
Evan Atwater was the only Bruin to reach double figures in
points, scoring 21 on 9-17 shooting, and had a couple of assists.
Mark Metzler had a team-high five rebounds. The Bruins hit .352
(19-54) from the field, but only .077 (1-13) from three-point
range, and .474 (9-19) from the line.
Berggren led all scorers with 17 points for the Pios, hitting
6-7 from the field and all five of his three-point attempts.
Robinowitz added 13 points, Papenfuss and Corey Allen 12 each, and
Thomas Tillery 11. Gene Rivera had six rebounds, leading the Pios
to a 44-28 advantage on the baords. Tillery passed out five
assists. Lewis & Clark wound up hitting .538 (35-65) from the
field, including .480 (12-25) from beyond the arc, and .615 (8-13)
from the line.
George Fox (8-14, NWC 4-9) closes out the regular season with
three games at home, first hosting Pacific University Saturday at
8:00 p.m. Lewis & Clark (14-7, NWC 8-5), still in serious
contention for one of the three NWC Tournament berths, visits
Willamette University Saturday for a critical match, also at 8:00
p.m. Both games will be preceded by NWC women's contests at 6:00
p.m.
