NEWBERG, Ore. - Jeff Johnston's grand slam home run highlighted
a first-game offensive show by the Pacific University Boxers in a
13-4 win over the George Fox University Bruins, but the Bruins
bounced back with a 13-run 5th inning to win the nightcap 20-4 in
Northwest Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon here at Morse
Field.
Pacific took quick control of the first game, exploding for five
runs in the top off the 2nd off Bruin starter Preston Langeliers
(0-1). Brandon Kon and Joey Pulito had RBI singles in the rally and
the Bruins made two costly errors that kept the inning alive. The
Bruins got one run back in the home half when Josh Burch was hit by
a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Todd Siler, but the
Boxers added two more in 4th on a two-run single by Matt Hendryx,
then put the game away with five more in the 5th.
The Boxers' rally began with a double by Nick McNeely and a
single by Kaeo Lau Hee, then Langeliers balked in McNeely. Walks to
Andrew Curtin and Pulito filled the bases, and Johnston drove a
shot to right that skipped off the top of the fence and into the
softball field beyond, knocking out Langeliers. Consecutive singles
by McNeely, Lau Hee, and Kon produced a final run in the 6th.
The Bruins got two in the 6th on doubles by Kyle Kuenzi and Dan
Winterstein and a balk that scored Winterstein, and an unearned run
in the 7th, but finished with only seven hits against Pacific
hurlers Jason Reed (1-0) and Ryne Miyamoto. Reed went six innings,
allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned, with three
strikeouts and three walks, before Miyamoto finished up.
Pulito had three hits in the Boxers' 14-hit attack, while
Johnston added a double to his slam and drove in five runs.
McNeely, Lau Hee, and Kon each had two hits, with McNeely scoring
three times. Winterstein was the only Bruin to collect two hits.
George Fox turned the offensive tables in the second game,
starting with two runs in the 1st off Brandon Larson (0-2).
Winterstein led off with a double and scored on a triple by Matt
Wyckoff, who then scored on Ryan Fobert's double. The Boxers tied
it in the 3rd on RBI singles by Hendryx and Lau Hee, but the Bruins
regained the lead in the home half as Burch scored on the front end
of a double steal with Fobert, who later came in on Michael Woo's
single.
Johnston hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th to score Korey Yost,
cutting the margin to 4-3, but the Bruins added two more in the
bottom of the frame. Derek Aldrich singled and Winterstein walked,
finishing Larson. Reliever Nate McBride wild pitched the runners
along, and Wyckoff delivered them with his second triple of the
game, tying a Bruin record achieved previously by Chris Wakeland
vs. Lewis-Clark State in 1994 and Ryan LeBreton vs. California
Lutheran in 1999.
In the 5th, the Bruins sent 19 batters to the plate against
three Pacific hurlers and put together 13 runs on eight hits, four
walks, two hit batsmen, and two Boxer errors. Aldrich had two hits
and drove in three runs in the inning. After Pacific got its final
run in the top of the 6th on a Yost home run, his first of the
season, the Bruins made it an even 20 with an unearned run in the
bottom of the 6th.
Aldrich and Fobert had three hits each in the Bruins' 18-hit
assault, Aldrich with three RBIs and three runs scored and Fobert
two of each. Winterstein, Wyckoff, Kuenzi and Woo had two hits
apiece, Winterstein scoring four times and Wyckoff driving in four.
Jason Brown, who came in to pinch-run in the 5th, scored three
times in only two innings. Andy Tolbert, Lau Hee, and Yost
collected two hits each for the Boxers.
Shane Dalgelish (2-0) was the benefactor of the Bruins' big
bats, scattering eight hits over five innings to pick up the win
before Kyle Johnson and Travis Schroeder worked an inning apiece.
George Fox (6-3, NWC 3-1) visits Lewis & Clark College for a
four-game conference set Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday's
twinbill slated for 11:00 a.m. Pacific (2-5, NWC 1-3) hosts Corban
College Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in a non-league game.
