SALEM, Ore. – Running into a scoring machine that
had racked up five goals in a game against Willamette University
the day before, the George Fox University Bruins were equally
unable to slow down the Warner Pacific College Knights, who cruised
to an 8-2 win over the Bruins in the Capital Classic men's
soccer tournament Saturday evening here at Willamette's
Sparks Field.
Warner Pacific opened the scoring with a pair of goals seven and
eight minutes into the game, the first on an unassisted goal from
45 yards out by Justin Coughlin and the second on a shot from Davor
Lukic after a pass from Luis Galvan. Jon Maroni
got the Bruins within one with the first George Fox goal of the
season, sending in a shot from two yards out near the right post
after a pass from Garrett Blizzard.
The Knights then put the game away with six unanswered goals, two
in the first half and four in the second half.
Coughlin added a second goal at 26:02 and Galvan scored at 32:53,
both assisted by Alija Sacirovic. In the second
half, Andrew Scott scored twice and Sacirovic and Matt Radke each
scored once for the Knights. Maroni scored again
for the Bruins three minutes from the end after a pass from Bret
Hamilton.
Warner Pacific out-shot George Fox 22-7, including a 10-3 margin
in shots on goal. Ted Latta had one save for the
Knights in goal while Danny Kamna, in his first start for the
Bruins, had two.
George Fox is now 0-2 on the season while Warner Pacific is
2-1. The Bruins return home to open their home
season Friday, hosting the University of Great Falls at 4:00 p.m.
at the Morse Complex Soccer Field.
