GEORGE FOX 4, WALLA WALLA 0: Bruins Pick Up First Victory by Whipping Wolves

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore.
– Four different players scored their first goals of the season and goalie Danny Kamna picked up his first career shutout as the George Fox University Bruins notched their first victory of the 2008 season, a 4-0 win over the Walla Walla University Wolves, in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday afternoon here at Morse Field.

The Bruins scored their first goal at 12:20 in the first half when Brian Story passed ahead to Tony Zamora for a breakaway goal past Wolves keeper Kevin Torres.  The home team made it 2-0 later in the period at 37:32 when Brennan Altringer passed off to Matt Gurlides on his left when Torres came out to challenge him, and Gurlides scored from five yards out into an empty net.

The Bruins added two insurance goals late in the second half.  Kyle Story in the left corner fed Jon Gutierrez on the left wing, and he drilled home a shot from 30 yards out that appeared to be screened from Torres by other players at the 75:09 mark.  Altringer got his first score of the season with two minutes left when he took a pass from Brian Story near the right corner of the keeper's box, feinted around Torres, and scored from 15 yards out into an open goal.

George Fox maintained solid control throughout the game, taking 35 shots, including 17 on goal, while the Bruin defense completely stifled the Wolves, who got only six shots total and just one on goal.  Kamna saved that one.  Torres did come up with 12 stops for Walla Walla.

With the non-conference portion of the schedule complete, George Fox (1-4-1) now turns its attention to Northwest Conference play with the University of Puget Sound coming to town Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. contest.  The game will follow the GFU-UPS women's game at 12:00 noon.  Walla Walla (0-5) will try to snap its losing skid Thursday at 4:00 p.m. against Columbia Bible College in Abbottsford, British Columbia.
