TACOMA, Wash. - Cole Peterson
headed in the only goal of the game off a corner kick in the 38th
minute as the University of Puget Sound Loggers edged the George
Fox University Bruins 1-0 in a Northwest Conference men's soccer
defensive struggle Saturday afternoon here on Peyton Field at Baker
Stadium.
The Loggers broke a scoreless deadlock when Daniel Lee set up a
corner kick and put the ball up along the far post. Peterson
used his 6-4 frame to rise above the crowd in front of the goal and
deflect the ball past George Fox keeper Elliott Davis for a 1-0
lead at the 37:13 mark. Neither team found the net the rest
of the way.
Puget Sound took 16 shots in all, seven on goal, with Davis
stopping five of them and the Bruins collecting one team save in
the 50th minute. George Fox had six total shots, two on goal
with one each by Derek Buttrick and Brian Story,
but Chris McDonald saved both for the Loggers to collect the
shutout.
Puget Sound held a decided advantage on corner kicks, 9-2.
Although each team picked up one yellow card, it was a
cleanly-played game with only eight total fouls called, five on the
Loggers and three on the Bruins.
George Fox (5-12, NWC 2-10) remains in the area to play at
Pacific Lutheran University Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Puget Sound (9-7-2,
NWC 6-4-2) concludes its home schedule Sunday, hosting Pacific
University at 1:30 p.m.
