NEWBERG, Ore. - With scoring opportunities at a premium all day, it was an unassisted goal in the first half by the University of Puget Sound's Chris Shaw that decided a defensive duel as the visiting Loggers edged the George Fox University Bruins 1-0 in Northwest Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.

Controlling the ball early in the match, the Loggers got off three shots before the Bruins could manage an attempt, connecting on the third try.  Shaw received a ball midway between the midfield stripe and the end line and raced down the left sideline, turned the corner to get around a Bruin defender, and hooked a shot from 15 yards out along the baseline just inside the far post past Bruin keeper Jake Maguire 10 minutes into the game.  It was Shaw's fourth of the season and turned out to be the only goal of the game. 

It also turned out be the only shot on goal for Puget Sound in the half out of their total of four shots.  George Fox got only three shots in the first 45 minutes, all on goal but all saved by Logger keeper Greg Saetrum. 

The Loggers got four more shots, two on goal, in the second half, with Maguire stopping both.  The Bruins had six second-half shots, including two excellent on-goal shots by Sean Jany with 24 minutes and 10 minutes left in the game that could have tied it up, but Saetrum was in position to make the save both times. 

George Fox (4-7, NWC 1-5) hits the road the next two weekends, starting Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. match at Pacific University.  Puget Sound (6-6, NWC 3-3) hosts the conference co-leader and 25th-ranked Pacific Lutheran University Sunday, also at 2:30 p.m.
