BEAVERTON, Ore. – After dropping three doubles
matches, two of them by narrow margins, the George Fox University
Bruins could only split six singles matches and fell 6-3 to the
much-improved Pacific University Boxers in Northwest Conference
women's tennis action Sunday afternoon here at the Tualatin
Hills Tennis Center.
The match had been moved from the GFU campus courts due to wet
conditions.
The Boxers' Megan Yoshimoto and Cat Goya took the No. 1
doubles handily over the Bruins' Mollee Robinson and Corinne
Borrelli, but the other two doubles were closely contested, Pacific
taking them both by 8-6 scores. Dayna Wong and
Jaime Yoshino prevailed over Courtney Banks and Betsy Ann Penman at
No. 2, and Stephanie Velligas and Dawn Greene edged Shanna Lesire
and Liliya Abildayev at No. 3.
Pacific took the first two singles matches as Goya downed Banks
6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, and Yoshimoto dispatched Robinson 6-4, 6-2 at
No. 2. Borrelli picked up the Bruins'
first win at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Yoshino, Lesire
captured the No. 4 match 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 over Wong, and Penman
rallied for a third-set tiebreaker win over Tessa Krebs at No. 5,
2-6, 6-2, (10-3). Velligas closed out the match
for the Boxers with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Abildayev at No. 6.
George Fox (1-1, NWC 1-1) next hosts Whitworth University Friday
at 2:00 p.m. and Pacific (2-0, NWC 2-0) hosts Whitman College
Friday at 4:00 p.m.
